SHA Students Raise Over $10K for Miles for Miracles

Recently, students from West Intermediate, Mt. Pleasant High School and Sacred Heart Academy joined efforts and raised over $25,000 for Miles for Miracles, donating funds to Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Central Michigan, Woodland Hospice, American Cancer Society, Angel Wings Fund and Community Cancer Services. At SHA, the event was held in memory of Denise Terwilliger and students in grades 7-12 raised $10,620. Congratulations to the freshmen class--- not only did they have 100% participation, they also won the grade-level competition by raising $5,186. Thank you to SHA parent and cancer survivor, Marcy Hosking, for sharing her story. Also, thank you to hairdressers (and SHA parents) Gina Filhart and Marci Gruss, for giving haircuts to Kate Goenner, Samantha McDonald, Molly Yonker and Lauren Rookard. The girls donated their hair which will be used to make wigs for cancer patients. After some friendly class competitions which included 3-legged races, wheel borrow races, hoola hoop contest, 3-point shooting contest and name that tune, the students walked a 5K through the down town area and upon returning to school enjoyed a Doozie’s ice cream treat. A heartfelt thank you to all the families who supported the event.

The Miles for Miracles fundraiser began 14 years ago at West Intermediate, with keynote speaker Beth Grawburg, who lost her battle to cancer in 2006. SHA was invited to participate by the event chairperson, Julie Maxon, in 2010 and has been participating every year since.
